The 206 page, full color book features work by 60 regional photographers from the 14 counties of Western Pennsylvania (ages 9 to 70, from children and hobbyists to fine art photographers and industry professionals), who have created compelling images of our region's built environment. Designed by Pittsburgh based & nationally acclaimed designer Brett Yasko, the book also features brief essays by each of the four co-editors/co-authors, contributor comments, and a photo index with County names and GPS coordinates to go with every sign.

Pittsburgh Signs Project: 250 Signs of Western Pennsylvania was supported, in part, by a regional award from Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections and The Sprout Fund. The book reflects the authors' belief that signs provide people with authentic inspiration, resonate with the personality and interests of viewers, and represent an under-recognized material culture those things that best demonstrate Pittsburgh's genius of place.

Pittsburgh Signs Project: 250 Signs of Western Pennsylvania was recently the subject of a January 2009 nationally distributed Associated Press article, was named one of the Best Local Books of 2008 by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and was featured on Dave Crawley's KD Country program on KDKA TV. The nationally distributed music magazine MAGNET ran a piece about the book when New York City based musician & writer Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500/Luna/Black Postcards) selected the book for his "From the Desk Of" guest editor slot.

Pittsburgh Signs Project: 250 Signs of Western Pennsylvania (Softcover)5 Signs of Life

William - April 07th 2009

The Pittsburgh Signs Project is a triumph on all levels. The cover is visually striking. The signs depicted in the book have been intentionally and ingeniously removed from their immediate context and dramatically isolated. Starkly presented, with a minimum of copy, the photographs allow the viewers to conceive their own interpretation of the mystery and sometimes dilapidated beauty of these pieces of history and art that dot the Western Pennsylvania landscape. The effect is one that can be likened to entering a Japanese rock garden, calming and contemplative.

The book is conventionally sized and not meant to be consigned to that corner of the book shelf reserved for unwieldy and unread collectibles. A book so thoughtfully and carefully laid out needs to be treated in kind. This is not a book about art; it is rather a book as art.

Pittsburgh Signs Project: 250 Signs of Western Pennsylvania (Softcover)5 Pittsburgh Flavored Americana

Andrew - March 23rd 2009

My favorite thing about the Pittsburgh Signs Project is seeing how the proprietors that commissioned the signs chose to present themselves to the world. The book is part time capsule, part branding study, and all Pittsburgh. It captures the City's affectation for a time before retail chain dominance - which represents one of the more prominent parts of Pittsburgh's quirky charm.

This book would make a great addition to any Pittsburghers library or coffee table. Also great for any marketing student or sentimental Steel City expatriate.

Pittsburgh Signs Project: 250 Signs of Western Pennsylvania (Softcover)5 Stunning Urban Design Project!!

Martin - February 23rd 2009

This brilliant signs project has proven itself as one of the best artistic releases of the year! I was completely taken by surprise by the personal relations I found in these images. There is a wonderful balance between text and image, while letting the signs speak for themselves. This book is sure to appeal to sign-enthusiasts, architects, designers, and fans of urban typography alike. I definitely recommend this for any creative mind that craves something fresh, new, and exciting!
